Surgical Connection of second toe to third toe
Section:  Surgery

Had surgery Sept. 2009  to correct a big toe bunion and to straighten a 2nd toe due to pre-dislocation syndrome. 2nd toe had a pin inserted for 6 wks., and the middle joint fused, and now I can't flex the 2nd toe at any joint.  Also 3rd toe is now underlapping 2nd.  Dr. wants to perform a second surgery to remove scar tissue that formed because the 2nd toe was immobile for so long and also wants to stitch 2nd to 3rd toe to correct the underlapping? thoughts?  Still have numb feeling on the bottom of my foot and some residual swelling.

Thank you for posting.

If you could, please post some clinical pictures to add to the possible discussion to this forum.  This would be a great help.

As with any surgical opinions, it still would be my advice to return to your surgeon to discuss any and all concerns that you have regarding the original surgery as well as any future procedures that you may be considering.

Re: Surgical Connection of second toe to third toe

Martha, I'm sorry you are having a problem. My advice to you echoes what Eric has said. Ideally pictures of your foot with and without weight would be helpful. My recommendation is that you consult with the surgeon on his surgical treatment and seek one or two other surgeons also to see if that treatment plan would be your best treatment. However, bear in mind that pictures alone cannot provide a surgical plan for you. Complications can occur in a small percentage of cases.  An informed opinion would involve pre- and post-op xrays and a physical exam to give you the best informed opinion. With any subsequent opinions, it would be useful to have those items. Best wishes in your recovery.
