Can Unstable Ankle Fractures be Treated Conservatively?

Surgical treatment for ankle fractures is standard of care. Stable fractures can, however, be treated conservatively, and surgical intervention is reserved for unstable fractures with a high risk of secondary displacement. Clinical and radiological outcomes are limited for treatment of unstable ankle fractures. Five randomized controlled trials that examined surgical versus conservative interventions were reviewed in this paper in a systematic analysis to determine clinical and radiological outcomes.
