Deltoid Ligament Rupture in Ankle Fracture: Diagnosis and Management

PRESENT Podiatry News Flash   January 24, 2020

The deltoid ligament restricts eversion and external rotation of the talus on the tibia. In bimalleolar equivalent ankle fractures, there is often medial instability even after fibular reduction. Open reduction internal fixation of the fibula is recommended in such injuries, and the syndesmosis is typically repaired if unstable. Often, the deltoid ligament is not repaired, and only an ORIF of the ankle fracture is performed. This study aims to compare the addition of deltoid repair with open reduction and internal fixation of the fibula alone.
