However, most academic conference presentations follow a rigid structure of dimmed lights, busy slides, and focus heavily on the charts, data, and graphs. By the time intervention A versus intervention B is presented, many audience members will be on their phones checking emails, and by the time a P-value is mentioned, they’ve mentally checked out. Sometimes it can appear that only the speaker is engaged in the topic at hand. Additionally, there often is little time at the end of the hour for the audience to engage in any discussion. This article presents the idea of creating opportunities for the audience to engage in the topic at hand. In recent years, there has been a paradigm shift in medical schools to shift away from the podium lecturer and to engage new ways of learning. This includes the flipped classroom, case-based learning, among other techniques. It is likely that “the traditional lecture” will never be replaced, but this article reminds speakers that there is always room to improve one’s presentation style
