Change in Gait Biomechanics After Total Ankle Replacement and Ankle Arthrodesis: A Systematic Review and Meta Analysis

Both total ankle replacements and ankle arthrodesis are options for patients with osteoarthritis of the ankle joint, however each has different effects on the biomechanics of the lower extremities. There have been several studies trying to determine the biomechanical effects of each procedure to try and identify advantages and disadvantages to each. This systematic review and meta analysis researched the current literature and analyzed 17 studies including 833 patients and found that there is moderate evidence for improvement in lower limb kinematics, kinetics and spatio-temporal parameters after TAR.
