Results of Functional Treatment of Epi-Metaphyseal Fractures of the Base of the Fifth Metatarsal

Type I and II 5th metatarsal base fractures are very common, however there has been debate about whether these fractures need surgical treatment or if conservative functional treatment can be successful. In this longitudinal restrospective study with prospective follow up, patients with type I and II 5th metatarsal base fractures were treated functionally with weightbearing as tolerated without immobilization. They found excellent VAS FA and SF-12 scores at 5 years of follow up. Due to these findings, the authors determined that functional weight bearing treatment led to excellent 5-year results for both type I and type II fractures.
